EU and Algeria Sign Energy Agreement

July 12, 2013 - PRLog -- The European Union and Algeria signed an agreement last Sunday (7th July), pledging to co-operate on energy in the future.

The EU and Algeria have now agreed to work together in oil and gas, renewable energy and energy efficiency. Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the EU commission, told a news conference that “This is a strategic document, a tool to develop energy cooperation between Algeria and the EU.” He went on to describe the link as “a strong relationship based on mutual respect and trust”, emphasizing his belief that the future is looking “very promising”.

Algeria provides almost 50 billion cubic metres of gas to other countries, now making it the fifth largest net exporter of natural gas according to the International Energy Agency’s 2011 statistics. Currently, Algeria covers 13-15 percent of natural gas imports for the 28 member states.

German consortium Desertec have projected that Europe will import up to a fifth of its electricity from solar and wind parks in North Africa and the Middle East by 2050.
