BILLINGS, Mont. - July 12, 2013 - PRLog -- On July 20th from 11:00am -3:00pm the Dialysis Clinic, Inc., in Billings, Montana, will host a free community event, The Big Sky Kidney Karnival, for everyone to enjoy. The Karnival will be located at the Rocky Village Park (access the park on Village Lane by way of Poly Drive or 17th street west).

Free barbeque will be provided. Local musicians will perform throughout the day. There will be activities for all ages, including a dunking booth and ‘pin the kidney on the body’.

Kaptain Kidney will be on hand to provide information about kidney health. There will be information about kidney disease prevention, dialysis treatment, and kidney transplants.

Community partners will provide free blood pressure checks, diabetes testing, and offer information on smoking cessation and food samples.

“We are providing a hands-on approach to actively and creatively learn how to take care of ourselves as well as those with kidney disease,” states Cindy Cornell, Social Worker for DCI Billings.

The event is part of a nationwide program, The DCI Purpose Project, which seeks to educate communities about the risk factors for kidney disease and the need for organ donation; identify those at risk for kidney disease; and provide support and encouragement for people with chronic kidney disease.

One in three U.S. adults are at risk for kidney disease…and most don’t know it yet.

A person is at risk for kidney disease if he or she has:

·         Diabetes

·         High blood pressure

·         Heart disease

·         A family history of kidney failure

Early kidney disease is often referred to as a silent killer because there are no signs or symptoms. While kidney disease can affect people of all ages and races, African Americans, Hispanics, and American Indians are at increased risk for kidney failure due to higher rates of diabetes and high blood pressure in these communities.

For every ten new cases of kidney disease, seven had diabetes or hypertension listed as the primary cause of kidney failure, as noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Cindy says, “We are so proud that the community has pulled together to offer their services and provide information. We are thankful for the support of the Indian Health Board of Billings, Hansen Music, A.C.E.S., Billings Clinic Dialysis Center, Montana’s Big Sky State Games, St. Vincent Healthcare, National Kidney Foundation, Montana Beef Council, RiverStone Health, and the American Heart Association.”

The DCI Billings team encourages the community to attend The Big Sky Kidney Karnival. For more information call 406-252-9270.
