STAMFORD, Conn. - July 12, 2013 - PRLog -- STAMFORD, CT -- University of Chicago student Martin Spencer Hyman will teach SAT/PSAT prep courses to improve math performance at the Stamford Innovation Center this summer and early fall.  The courses will run on weekday mornings in July and August.  After school starts, the course will be available on weekday afternoons.  The small class size allows customized instruction.

Mr. Hyman will teach several sessions of his two-week math prep course that focus on the individual shortcomings of students.  He will correct problems and unveil essential rules for the fast and accurate processing of answers.

"The Hyman Prep Course is strictly and exclusively math," he said.  "My goal is to identify weak areas, dissect the problems and focus on improving comprehension and performance to bring up the overall score. The strategy is simple: choke out the weaknesses."

Just a few wrong answers can radically change a score on the SAT, he explained.  Therefore, the idea for the course is to focus on the types of questions that could trip up students and make sure they master them.

"We’re not reinventing the wheel here," he added.  "We're building on what the students already know and fine tuning to make them test-ready.  The idea is to make math second nature.  This is a mastery course."

The class covers all four sections of the SAT/PSAT: Algebra, Geometry, Arithmetic and Statistics.  Classes will deliver 20 hours of instruction over two weeks Monday through Friday with two hours a day of demonstrations, exercises and practice tests.  Students will take an assessment test on the first day to identify common pitfalls and shape the curriculum to deal with misperceptions.  More information on the class and links to registration pages can be found at http://mspencerhyman.wordpress.com.

An Applied Math Major at the University of Chicago, Mr Hyman had perfect math scores on the SAT and on the math subject tests.  He achieved scores of 5 on the AP Tests in Calculus BC and Calculus AB and was a State Champion Mathlete multiple times.  He is a graduate of Greenwich High School where he was president of the senior class.

"We’re excited about hosting this math prep course at the Stamford Innovation Center," said Peter Propp, vice president of marketing at the Stamford Innovation Center "Creating interest in math and science is in the interest of the local startup community. Martin’s approach is thoughtful and unique – maybe even disruptive to the way SAT math prep is typically taught -- and we love disruptive ideas here at the Center."

Students and parents can attend a free Hyman Information Session at the Innovation Center to gain an overview of the class on July 17 from 9:00 - 10:00 AM or July 18 from 12 noon - 1:00 PM.
