About the Author: These poems were written by the illustrator’s grandmother, Susan Lynn Gould, who was born in 1898. She was a classic Texas plainswoman, the prairie of that time being not far removed from the Wild West. A farm girl armed only with a grade school education and unshakable faith, she braved the rigors of the dustbowl and the Great Depression. She raised four vibrant daughters and never abandoned her sense of whimsy. After World War II, she opened a successful cafe and finally began to express her reverence for life’s ordinary treasures in poetry she gifted to her children and grandchildren. She passed away in 1971, but her poetry lingers as a lasting gift.

Illustrator Toni Verkruysse has illustrated other children’s books and wrote the science fiction novel Pale As Hope. “My grandmother’s poems have bewitched me since youngest childhood. It was always my plan to one day paint the pictures they conjured in my mind.”
