Follow on Google News | Laseronics Uses Lasers at the Tahrir Square DemonstrationsThe team at Laseronics created a custom-made laser light show, to rally the crowds during the recent political demonstrations in Tahrir Square, Egypt
By: Justin Perry - ILDA Board of Directors Over 200,000 people gathered in Tahrir Square, and stood witness to the laser spectacle put on by Laseronics, as messages such as “OUT,” “Game Over” and “MORSI” (with a strike through the name) were displayed in laser light onto the side of a large administrative building. In addition, a variety of Muslim and Christian symbols were displayed, as well as rallying messages in both English and Arabic text. With such a demanding and politically worked-up crowd gathered in Tahrir Square, the team at Laseronics took great risks even to conduct the event. Not only was there a physical risk with so many people in attendance, but Laseronics also faced legal risks, since anti-government messages were being displayed in a public area. This was not a contracted event, and the team at Laseronics received no financial compensation for their efforts and work. They were instead doing it because they shared the same passion and politically charged feelings as those demonstrating in Tahrir Square. During setup, the all-volunteer team at Laseronics struggled to locate a position directly across from the building, from which they could project from. Finally, a suitable balcony provided an adequate position. Given the risks, quick setup and reliability was needed to ensure the event would even be able to take place. The entire team at Laseronics reports that they are happy with the results. They have received a tremendous amount of feedback since the event took place. Their work was widely publicized worldwide, appearing on major news networks, such as CNN, BBC, NBC, FOX and others. Laseronics has also received reports that their work and laser show did help to calm the crowds in Tahrir Square and unify them (if only for a moment) under one common message. They truly believe in their work, and want to make it known that they support the people of Egypt in this regard.
