Charlotte, NC, July 8, 2013 – Councilman James Mitchell of District 2 is pleased to announce his bid for Mayor at West Charlotte High School on Monday, July 8, 2013 at 12:00 noon.

Mitchell, a Democrat, with six terms of dedicated service on City Council, is an experienced leader in the Charlotte community. An accomplished public servant, he is the Chair of the Economic Development Committee and serves on the Council-Manager Relations Committee. He is the Council Representative to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership and Charlotte Regional Partnership Board. He is also on the board of Center City Partners.

Given the opportunity to serve, Mitchell plans to further Charlotte’s economic development as he recruits more corporations; consequently increasing employment opportunities for citizens. He will advocate to close the opportunity gap for the new Charlotte Inclusion Program, designed for women and minority owned companies and work to revitalize Charlotte’s major business corridors: West Trade/Beatties Ford Road, North Davidson, Central Avenue and North Tryon. He will continue his commitment to public safety by bringing new police stations to needed areas, advocate for local neighborhood crime watch programs, all while facilitating the discussion to increase the budget for much needed sidewalks to keep the city safe. Mitchell pledges to champion Affordable Housing Initiatives such as the new rental subsidy program, as well as support the Housing Bond for 2014.

Councilman Mitchell is a leader nationally in municipal politics. He has spent a number of years building progressive policies to benefit cities and towns throughout the country. In 2011, he served as President of the National League of Cities (NLC), an organization dedicated to improving cities and towns by creating, advocating for and helping pass federal legislation and policy that is beneficial to the growth and development of cities and towns. He also serves as the former Chairman of the NLC Leadership Training Council and Board Member of the NLC’s Institute of Youth, Education and Family. He is a former President of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO) and the former Chairman of the NBC-LEO Foundation, the past President of the North Carolina Black Elected Municipal Officials (NCBEMO) and has served on the Board of the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM).

His local activities are numerous, including his serving as a seated board member for the Right Moves for Youth Advisory Council, the North Carolina Center for Afterschool Programs and the Greater Enrichment After School program.

Mitchell, a longstanding transportation supporter, would complete the 2030 Transit Plan, assist in the multi-model development and provide strong leadership in the effort to keep Charlotte Douglas International Airport managed by the city.

Mitchell plans to partner with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools on securing funding for Middle and High School Resource Officers and will continue to lead efforts for adequate afterschool programs.

A graduate of West Charlotte Senior High School and North Carolina Central University (NCCU), where he became a member of the Tau Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, he is a homegrown leader. From his leadership at East Stonewall A.M.E. Zion Church to his service on the Charlotte City Council, he is committed to the Queen City. Mitchell, the father of two daughters, is married to Joan Higginbotham, American engineer and former NASA astronaut.
