< p>Background & citations

< p>QR Code (Quick Response) is an image barcode, invented and first used by the Toyota subsidiary Denso Wave in 1994 to track vehicle manufacturing. [1] QR Codes are now being used by entrepreneurs to create new products and services; by established business for packaging and consumer advertising; by organizations and institutions to publicize their events and activities; and by various agencies for data tracking. QR codes have been printed on Chinese train tickets since 2009 [2]

< p>As with many innovations, it has taken the large-scale distribution of another technology to make the QR Code an idea whose time had come. It took the smartphone, whose camera could scan a QR and be read with an application of the type used in bar-code scanners. A Pew Research Center reports that between May 2011 and February 2012 ownership of smartphones surpassed that of ordinary mobile phones. About half of all adults in the US have smartphones. [3] A June 2011 report on early adopters, meaning those who have actually used a smartphone to scan a QR code showed that 14 million of the total U.S. smartphone audience had scanned codes. About half of those were between the ages of 18 and 34.[4]

< p>While marketers and companies are making QR’s ubiquitous, most consumers are unfamiliar what these codes do. Part of it is growing pains. Standards for QR scanner apps vary. They change from week-to-week, newer ones arriving, older ones departing or updated. Google Goggles [http://www.google.com/mobile/goggles/#text] works on most smartphones, and has the unique feature of being able to identify landmarks and points of interest worldwide That said, a smart phone needs one of these apps to scan a QR. Among smartphone owners, only about 15% have gotten that far. [5] The basic rules of photography for framing, steadiness and above all lighting apply in using a smartphone app for scanning a QR code.

< p>QR providers are promoting new ideas--some practical, some entertaining, some bizarre—for what works and what does not in using QR codes. Some of what does work goes back to the manufacturing roots of QR. PennBarry, a Texas manufacturer of supply and exhaust fans puts QR Code labels on all its fans to provide access to Operation and Maintenance Manuals from a smartphone or mobile tablet. [6]

< p>Other useful applications have been the promotion of events and tours. Museums, libraries and galleries. have used QR’s at exhibitions. [7] That a QR can be scanned on any relatively flat surface means the QR tattoo. Other whimsical or inspired uses of QR’s were in full bloom during a New York Fashion Week. They were on cookies from Tiffany, on dolls to be scanned for a chance to win designer clothes. and a model walked a runway with a QR code stitched on her Frans Baviera gown. [8]

< p>A number of start-up initiatives are focused on using QR’s for identification and medical information. PetHub provides QR tags for pets, which allow access to information such as contacts, medication and immunizations. A unique feature of the tag is that scanned with a GPS enabled smartphone the pet owner receives an email or text message with the exact location of where the tag was scanned. [9]

< p>This demonstrates one of the most effective uses of QR, which involves not just an alternative means of obtaining information, but obtaining information from a QR in a remote situation, in which information would otherwise be difficult or impossible to obtain.
