Cruel, unacceptable testing has been carried out for far to long now.  Animals are often bread in abundance for these tests where all of their natural life is spent caged up, in extremely poor conditions and then tested on daily - it simply is not right!  The tests themselves involve animals such as rabbits, mice, rats and guinea pigs where the animal is forced to eat, inhale or have a cosmetic ingredient rubbed onto them - often skin is shaved, the chemical is applied to eyes, mouth, ears or nose.  These tests are often carried out for 28 or 90 days at a time to see if the animal suffers a allergic reaction.  Once the test has run its course, the animal is then killed.  When the animal is dead, their body is cut open to see if there is any damage to tissue inside.

The term ‘Cruelty Free’ relates to a brand or product which has had no animal testing performed or contains any animal ingredients.  The first historical recording of the ‘cruelty free movement’ beginning was in the 1950ts when Lady Dowding persuaded manufacturers of ‘fake fur’ products to adopt the label ‘Beauty without cruelty’ which then went further in forming the charity movement (founded in 1959).

Through-out the late 1950ts to today, there have been many who have actively campaigned against animal testing and cruelty.  The many associated bodies in this fight (such as BVAU, Peta and the leaping bunny organization) have claimed a few victories since the millennium, though the fight still continues to abolish testing all together - especially in non-cosmetic products such as cleaning products.

In 2009 a law was passed through-out Europe that would legally see animal testing in a bad light, acknowledging the long running cruelty campaigns and then acted upon it.  The law relates to the selling of cosmetics as now being an illegal method of checking their suitability within the human market place.  However until very recently companies where still able to profit from products that still allowed testing on animals (in countries where there is no ban).  Since March 2013 a new law was passed that now prevents any cosmetic product that has been tested upon a animal can not be sold in the EU - even if the testing is performed in other countries.  Peta has commented on this as a ‘fantastic’ step forward and we agree!  Although there is still a long way to go with other areas of animal testing, it now suggests that active campaigners are giving these poor lab animals a voice of which higher powers are listening to.
