Follow on Google News | Backloading of CO2 quotas: the solution might be elsewhereEcoAct welcomes the decision to freeze 900 million of EU CO2 allowances, voted on Wednesday by the European Parliament. However, this action is far too limited to revive the regulatory market (EU ETS), defined as the cornerstone of EU climate action.
By: EcoAct As it stands, this system is not a solution since it encourages inaction. The alternative left to companies wishing to act on climate plan is to develop voluntary initiatives, increasingly embraced by major corporations. Combining the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in its own scope of activity and the financing of projects that avoid or sequester equivalent amounts of GHG, voluntary carbon neutrality schemes provide tangibles results when it comes to actions for the benefit of our climate. Voluntary carbon credits does not suffer from fluctuations of the regulatory market. It is an opportunity for firms and communities to support highly targeted projects, often small-scale. Beyond the CO2 aspect, they significantly improve the living conditions of local people or damage to biodiversity. For example, the distribution of improved cookstoves or water filters in African rural areas fights effectively against deforestation, but also improves the health of communities, reducing particle matters they are exposed to, or give them the means to consume a safe water for free. If support for the carbon market is a key element in the fight against climate change, voluntary approaches continues to grow in many parts of the world. End
