Oak Tree Failure Kills a Counselor at Camp Tawonga

An oak tree split and fell at Camp Tawonga, killing a camp counselor and injuring others.

SAN DIEGO - July 4, 2013 - PRLog -- My son called me yesterday, he was very upset about a death that occurred at Camp Tawonga, due to an oak tree failure.  He had worked at Camp Tawonga just last summer and had often sat in the same location where the tree fell.  He knew the camp counselor from UC Santa Cruz where he obtained his degreee in environmental studies.

As a certified arborist who performs tree risk assessment consulting services, this tree failure struck close way to close to home.  That could have easily been my son sitting under the tree when it failed.

I have several campground and manufactured home community clients who proactively took measures to inventory, inspect, assess and determine if their common area trees pose significant hazards to the their clients and the public. This kind of tragedy should remind commercial, recreational and private property owners the importance of inspecting and maintaining your tree assets to protect the public from foreseeable tree hazards.
