High-Tech Manufacturer Provides Solution to Skilled Labor Shortage

Targeted investment in employee training holds the key to filling the demand for skilled labor at Tech Molded Plastics

MEADVILLE, Pa. - July 3, 2013 - PRLog -- Tech Molded Plastics, Inc.  (Tech) has developed a unique strategy to meet the increased demand for skilled labor in the injection molded plastics industry. The strategy involves a partnership with RJG, an international leader in injection molding training, to train Tech’s employees on-site. This strategy, which focuses on developing current employees into more technical roles, marks a divergence from others in the industry that have placed emphasis on finding qualified external candidates.

Tech has embraced the industry’s ongoing challenge of finding and developing the necessary talent to handle today’s sophisticated manufacturing environment. Evidence of this challenge was documented in the 2011 skills gap report sponsored by Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute, which found that 67 percent of U.S. manufacturing companies face a shortage of skilled labor. A similar report in 2013 stated that “Industry leaders expect that access to a highly skilled, flexible workforce will be the most important factor in creating value over the next three to five years.”

To develop this robust internal education program, Tech invested in an internal facility devoted to training.  Eric Bowersox, the Process Engineering Manager at Tech, was recently certified by RJG to teach coursework related to the industry, making Tech one of only a few precision molders in North America to receive the certification standards and accreditation to conduct classes and certify graduates of the program by internationally-recognized systematic molding professionals.

“Plastics are going to vary.” Bowersox explained, “Our targeted investment in employee training means that we are a supplier that is staffed 24/7 with individuals who are capable of addressing processing issues from the plastics point of view.”

“The development of a highly-skilled workforce that can handle processing issues around the clock becomes a win-win as our customers benefit as much as we do,” Bowersox added.

Tech’s work force is one of the most skilled in the entire plastics industry, an accolade that the company seeks to improve with its newly-developed strategic goals. The first strategic goal is to provide all employees with certification in Injection Molding Essentials, which serves as an introduction to the world of plastics. Second, a certification in Systematic Molding, which provides an introduction to processing, will be offered to management and employees being developed into new roles. The third goal is to certify all processors and shift supervisors with a Master Molder I certification, which certifies in-depth knowledge for creating and trouble-shooting the injection molding process.
