EXTON, Pa. - July 2, 2013 - PRLog -- Today is the 150th anniversary of the historic battle at Little Round Top in Gettysburg PA. The Maine 20th Infantry Regiment was part of the defense to protect the summit from being overrun by Confederate soldiers. After 90 minutes of intense battle, the regiment was out of ammunition and their leader Col. Joshua Chamberlain could see another onslaught climbing the rugged slope. He gave his soldiers the orders, “defend at all cost” and commanded his group of Maine volunteers to fix bayonets. They charged the advancing soldiers with such surprise that the confederate unit fled in retreat. This action led to the defeat of Lee's action to capture Gettysburg with plans to advance to Philadelphia. In 1889, there was a reunion of the Maine 20th on Little Round Top to dedicate a monument to their comrades killed during that battle. In the 1889 photo of the regiment, Joshua Chamberlain can be seen sitting on the ground - front row center.

In the Maine historical fiction novel, Granite Hearts, author Elizabeth Egerton Wilder placed three of her Maine-based characters at the battle at Little Round Top where one of them died. To honor the 20th Maine Infantry, her book is being offered as a free kindle download on July 2nd. To download a copy, please visit http://www.Amazon.com.
