Ionia Martin "Ionia" This book has a variety of things to love. The illustrations are beautifully drawn and life-like. The pictures fill the pages and the text has the option to enlarge it and with a simple sweep of the finger moves on to the next text. I found this story to be compelling and appropriate for little kids up to age ten. The story revolves around a herd of African elephants and one little elephant in particular, Jomo. The little elephant doesn't want to do any work and doesn't understand why he should have to until he is faced with events that force him to understand.

This book has an admirable lesson that involves teaching your child about the value of hard work and the love of a family. What I liked the most about this book is that there is more for the child and parent to discuss after the book is over. There are questions included for you and your child to talk about and also a little page at the end that has further information about the continent and the animals. Nicely arranged and very well formatted, this book is one to download for a curious child.

SIBLING RIVALRY

And though Jomo has a strong will and a good nose, he can't hope to match Mata at digging into the dry earth with his feet and tusks to find the underground water.

And in beguiling portraits, she has described the inhabitants of the African grasslands-the gangly giraffe, the watchful zebra, the golden-eyed lion, and of course the elephants, large and small, so mysterious yet so human.

A SURPRISE and added bonus is the "Enrichment Information" which includes lots of facts about the Masai people and the animals of the East African Savannah, the family life of elephants, their powerful ears, trunks and tusks, and unusual eating habits, facts about weaver birds, termite mounds and hyrax, the elephant's closest relative, no bigger than a rabbit!

A second big plus is the "Letter to Parents and Educators" which includes many relevant questions and comments to facilitate conversation with the young reader about the message of the story - learning to cope with the challenges of sibling rivalry.
