HOPEWELL’S REMEDY Kickstarting Its Way to the Finish Line

When a hapless alchemist lands in jail for comingling his recyclables, the real magic begins. This is the story of MR. HOPEWELL'S REMEDY, a charming, quirky, gently-absurd short film that’s Kickstarting its way towards the finish line.

SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. - July 1, 2013 - PRLog -- When Sasha Carrera approached filmmaker Kathi Carey last year to produce and direct the short film she had written, Mr. Hopewell’s Remedy, she was already familiar with both Kathi’s style and reputation as a filmmaker – Sasha was an actress in Kathi’s award-winning film Worth, which screened at 31 festivals and won 31 awards.

And, after Kathi read Sasha’s charming script, there was no question in her mind that she would take on the project, “I loved it from the moment I read it,” says Kathi, “and I knew exactly who I would cast in the pivotal role of the Sheriff.” Indeed.  In this 3-person film, casting would play a key role.  The Sheriff was eventually played by the person Kathi envisioned the first time she read the script:  Steve Tom, from HBO’s Funny or Die and TNT’s Major Crimes.  “He brought that crusty, grumpy, about-to-explode quality that overlays a heart of gold.”

The more difficult part to cast was that of the title role, Mr. Hopewell.  “He needs to be able to bring a character that goes through a major transformation,” explains Kathi.  But Kathi and Sasha both had a little ‘magic’ up their sleeve in the form of James Patrick Stuart, an actor they had been in acting class with, who had gone on to appear in many network television shows, including a recurring role on the CW’s Supernatural.  Sasha approached him and he enthusiastically agreed.

At that point production began in earnest with the two bringing in Ryan Angel of Angel Baby Productions to co-produce.  They wrapped principal photography late last October and the project currently has been edited.  They just need a few finishing touches like sound design, color correction, fx and music in order to start submitting it to festivals.  “The whole thing has been surreal,” says Sasha, “like a dream come true … the shooting, Kathi’s directing, the editing … how it all came together … just magical!  To see my story come to life … I almost can’t believe it!  And it’s been so gratifying to receive such amazing support from people … even people I don’t know!”

The plan is to finish the film and begin submitting it to festivals around the world starting, of course, with those that have already screened Kathi’s prior films.  Says Ryan, “It makes sense – this film is similar in style and tone to Kathi’s previous work and should attract the same audience.  I think it will do well on the circuit.”
