Follow on Google News | The other end of the spectrum. Growing Need for Board Certified Behavior AnalystsBy now, most people are aware of the rising number of cases of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
By: Behavioral Concepts, Inc. Over the last dozen years, ASDs have increased dramatically in the U.S. In 2000, one out of every 150 children had an ASD. In 2008, that number increased to one in 88. In 2013, who knows where that number might be? While the initial response to this increase is typically ‘how or ‘why’, the need for qualified Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) increases daily. “While clearly we would like to know what’s caused the increase in cases of ASDs, the real issue is helping these children and their families now with programs that teach social skills and address their specific needs,” said Dr. Jeff Robinson, founder and director of Behavioral Concepts, Inc., a company of behavioral clinicians specializing in the care of children with autism in Central Massachusetts. “The real issue is expense. Insurance makes it a bit more affordable but insurance companies want BCBAs to conduct these programs.” Adds Robinson, “Right now, there just aren’t enough BCBAs to provide the level of service we’d like.” The BCBA is a post-graduate degree. It requires a Master's degree, supervised clinical practice, and passing a national exam. “We do offer tuition assistance for full-time employees who want to get their BCBA while working here,” said Robinson. “The problem is the need is now.” Behavioral Concepts, Inc. is presently looking to hire both full-time and part-time BCBAs.
