Financial secrets as dangerous to a marriage as infidelity, says money expert

Honesty and openness key for relationships dealing with financial issues.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - June 26, 2013 - PRLog -- Vancouver, B.C It’s well-documented that financial problems are one of the leading causes of relationship problems. They bear all the same hallmarks as those related to infidelity:  secrecy, lack of trust, dishonesty. But according to Money Coaches Karin Mizgala and Sheila Walkington, we don’t tend to take them as seriously even though they may be just as fatal to a relationship as other, more recognized, sources of discord. The coaches are using their new book, Unstuck (http://www.moneycoachescanada.ca/unstuck/), to help couples move forward to financial security.

Many people find talking about money issues with their partner almost as difficult—if not more so—as talking with them about sex or raising kids. But Money Coaches are quick to point out a key difference: “Once you’re willing to start talking about finances, dealing with them and finding solutions to them is way easier” says Walkington.

The coaches offer several easy tips to get couples started on the right path.

Start talking, and start listening. It seems simple, but this is most important first step. Admit that there’s an issue and listen to your partner’s concerns.
Build a financial plan. It’s very much like running a business; you need to start creating a roadmap for financial success together. As part of this:
Set goals together. You need to make sure that you’re both on the same page when it comes to where you see your life together going both personally and financially. This is especially important if you plan on having a family.
Joint responsibilities: joint account. If you’re in a relationship you need to start thinking of the partnership you have. You’re still individuals, but from a financial perspective most couples run into trouble when they don’t see finances as a unit.
Consult a money coach. A third party can help diffuse some of the emotions and tensions that arise when money matters come into play. Their experience and objectivity can provide precisely the kind of measured input you need to move forward.

Mizgala adds, “These conversations won’t always be a walk in the park—I’ve been there myself—but the alternative to not having them is far worse. Best of all, bringing these issues out into the open can actually strengthen your relationship!”
