LONDON - June 26, 2013 - PRLog -- On a bitterly cold day in January (22 January 2013) a warm hearted and determined team of SUBWAY® franchisees delivered over 150,000 petitions to 10 Downing Street which was a flagship moment in the ‘Toast the Tax’ campaign which is fighting for the fair treatment of toasted sandwiches in light of the government’s much publicised U-turn with the pasty tax.

The petition drop was followed by a visit to the political lobby in Westminster where some Subs were also delivered.  This petition drop attracted further publicity such Ben Brogan’s Briefing as well as a variety of trade, regional and local press.

Amongst the group of franchisees, there was David Cameron, a franchisee from Dewsbury with the fortunate namesake who also featured on BBC2’s Daily Politics Show in live interview.  He was joined by franchisee’s representing different parts of the country, such Maureen Hibbens, Harvey Brown, Rachana Pancholi and Jitin Dixit who was representing the London and the South-East.  Jitin Dixit was interested in the campaign and he stretches further because of his involvement in 3 London based SUBWAY® franchised stores and has long questioned the treatment of VAT on toasted sandwiches.  His professional opinion on the matter after much research has led him to believe that the unfair VAT treatment is potentially a breach of the EU principles of equality of treatment and fiscal neutrality among retailers selling similar products that fulfil the same purpose with the fact that toasted but fresh, low calorie and low salt subs which form one of your five a day vegetable portions are being penalised whilst hot pasties receive an unfair tax break.  Mr. Dixit strongly feels that small businesses such as SUBWAY®stores are the backbone of the British economy and deliver valuable employment opportunities across the country.

SUBWAY® have claimed that “Government legislation still fails to create a legal framework which applies only an objective test, which the Subway brand understands is required by European Law.”

It appears strange that the British government is looking to punish small, tax paying and wholesome businesses such as SUBWAY® franchises, when at the same time they remain largely ineffectual with pressuring UK tax avoiding multinational giants such as Google, Amazon and Starbucks.

Though this petition drop was the culmination of a lot of hard work by the people of Good Relations Political which is part of the Good Relations Group, a lot of work continues with SUBWAY® on both the ‘Toast the Tax’ campaign and the brand’s industry leading public health commitments.
