EXTON, Pa. - June 26, 2013 - PRLog -- (American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Conference, Salt Lake City, June 26, 2013)

A woman in her 60s is trying to bend her prosthetic knee after recovering from a total knee replacement. A 24-year-old marine who had his right leg amputated below the knee has to learn to adapt with his prosthetic leg. What these two patients have in common is that a physical therapist (PT) will play a crucial role in their rehabilitation. How well the PT was trained can make a world of difference in the patients’ functional outcomes.

A Philadelphia, PA-based company, Education Management Solutions (EMS) is exhibiting its software at the APTA conference (Booth #1202) in Salt Lake City, UT. EMS’ technology is used by leading educational and healthcare institutions to improve the skill levels of care providers for better patient outcomes. EMS offers complete simulation training management solutions, from recording and playback of simulated training sessions to skills analysis and self-assessment, to better prepare tomorrow's PTs.

As part of physical therapy training, actors known as “standardized patients” are used to simulate a pattern of muscle weakness and sensory loss consistent with a simulated injury. Human patient mannequins are also used because they can simulate real-time changes in heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, heart rhythm, and pulmonary artery pressures. Because the training is staged in a non-threatening environment, the PT learner can learn from his or her mistakes without consequences for an actual patient.

EMS’ technology is designed to manage the entire PT simulation training, from video recording to playback, analysis, assessment, and scoring. Instructors use EMS’ software to assess students’ professional behavior, body mechanics, and competence at performing the appropriate examination techniques. Additionally, PT learners can use the technology to conduct self-assessment and reflection, which helps to strengthen their clinical reasoning and interpersonal skills, and body mechanics.
