BURLINGTON, Ontario - June 25, 2013 - PRLog -- Emterra Group’s “Make Your Contribution at the Curb” program is a waste recycling program like no other, intended to help the environment and regional healthcare. Emterra is contributing $1 for every tonne of recyclables collected in Niagara’s grey and blue boxes and for every single used tire collected.

Emterra, a leading Canadian waste management company, has committed to donating up to $500,000 over the life of the initiative (2011-2018) based on recycling efforts of the community. The donations will be allocated to the Walker Family Cancer Centre through the Niagara Health System’s It’s Our Time Campaign.

The community stands to benefit from improved cancer equipment and healthcare services, and the funds are welcomed by the St. Catharines based Walker Family Cancer Centre, which opened in March at the new hospital.

"We are a recycling, waste-diversion company, so we thought how can we tie in our company mission with the hospital foundations'," noted Paulina Leung, Emterra’s Business Development Manager.  This region-wide initiative allows "…the people of Niagara drive the success of our donation program…it ties in a social and environmental cause in one” Leung added.

In the first two years of the program, Emterra has presented donations in the amount of $36,500 and $39,365. Those donations are set to accelerate, as Leung announced Emterra’s industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) customers will be invited to contribute by making a commitment to increase their recycling efforts to promote an often overlooked opportunity – increasing recycling in the workplace. “We’re really proud of the way Niagara residents have responded to the ‘Make Your Contribution’ challenge,” Leung said.  She noted that even with the weight of recyclables getting lighter because of the growing use of plastic containers, Niagara residents still recycled more tonnage this year than they did last year.

With committed residents and businesses/institutions on board, the community as a whole stands to benefit from improved regional healthcare with increased donations. At the same time, the participating community will be contributing to their overall quality of life by diverting recyclables that would otherwise be destined for landfills.

Emterra Group (http://www.emterra.ca) is comprised of waste management companies that include Emterra Environmental, Emterra Tire Recycling and Canadian Liquids Processors Limited.  Currently, Emterra services 10% of the Canadian population in 80 communities. Each year, Emterra markets more than 500,000 tonnes of recyclables selling approximately 70% to North American markets.
