The Prodigal Son by Anna Belfrage

Anna Belfrage delves into Scottish history in her latest historical fiction, bringing 17th century Ayrshire back to vivid life

LEICESTSHIRE, U.K. - June 25, 2013 - PRLog -- Anna Belfrage’s The Prodigal Son is the third book in her historical time slip series. The novel is set in Lowland Scotland after the restoration of Charles II. ‘There are not many novels set in this part of Scotland during this period, but for me it was the perfect setting for The Prodigal Son to continue Alex’s and Matthew’s adventurous story,’ observes Anna.

Anna goes on to talk about the history behind her book ‘The people in Ayrshire were firm adherents to the Scottish Kirk, and the laws implemented in the early 1660s made it difficult for them to practise their faith. Religion led to open conflict, and many families suffered greatly in the turmoil. The events in The Prodigal Son gravitate round Sandy Peden, a charismatic Presbyterian preacher who led the English soldiers a merry dance over the Scottish moors in the 17th century. Devout, stubborn and brave, Sandy was an inspiration to the people of Ayrshire. This book is a homage to him, a man I don’t quite understand, but admire a lot!’

About the book:
Safely returned from an involuntary stay on a plantation in Virginia, Matthew Graham finds the Scottish Lowlands ripped apart by religious strife. His Restored Majesty, Charles II, requires all his subjects to swear fealty to him and the Church of England. In Ayrshire, people close ranks around their evicted Presbyterian ministers. Alex is made increasingly nervous by Matthew's support of the clandestine ministers – foremost amongst them the charismatic Sandy Peden. Privately, Alex considers Sandy an enervating fanatic and all this religious fervour is totally incomprehensible to her. So when Matthew sets his faith and ministers before his own safety he puts their marriage under strain. The situation is further complicated by the presence of Ian, the son Matthew was duped into disowning several years ago and now wants back. When Matthew places all their lives in the balance to save the preacher from the dragoons, Alex must ask just how much Matthew is willing to risk.

About the author:
Anna Belfrage was raised abroad on a pungent mix of Latin American culture, British history and Swedish traditions. For years she combined a challenging career with four children and snatched moments of writing.
