ABOUTAsia Travel's guides help discover Angkor's 'Lost City'

Aerial laser technology maps out 1,200 year-old city on Phnom Kulen

June 24, 2013 - PRLog -- Landmine expert and cartographer Stéphane De Greef and leading archaeologist Damian Evans, both freelance specialist guides for ABOUTAsia Travel, have been integral to a new research project that has led to the discovery (announced 18 June 2013) of Mahendraparvata city, founded 1,200 years ago, in Angkor.

The technologically groundbreaking project involved mounting a laser mapping instrument, using LiDAR technology, on a helicopter. Data collected identified a sprawling network of roads, temples and canals, until now hidden in dense vegetation, on the Phnom Kulen plateau. This aerial mapping exercise, combined with years of ground research, has revealed the ancient capital of Mahendraparvata that was the beginning of the Angkor Empire in AD802.

A researcher for the London-based Archaeology and Development Foundation, Belgian Stéphane De Greef is a mine expert for various international organisations, cartographer and entomologist. He works as a freelance specialist guide for ABOUTAsia Travel, imparting in-depth knowledge to clients about landmine issues in Cambodia as well as taking them to explore the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside. Stéphane De Greef has also created a new adventure tour for ABOUTAsia Travel clients which will launch later this year.

University of Sydney archaeologist Damian Evans guides ABOUTAsia Travel’s clients around Angkor’s treasures. He shares secrets with clients about Angkor Wat and shows them little-known corners of the complex, providing an exclusive experience. Damian Evans is also writing the lion’s share of a new guidebook about Angkor’s Temples, which will be published by ABOUTAsia Travel later this year.
