SOMERVILLE, Mass. - June 24, 2013 - PRLog -- “The Nutcracker” ballet premièred in December of 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.  The score was written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and has become one of the composer’s most famous works, particularly those pieces extracted from the ballet that are included in his Suite from the Ballet, Op. 71a.  The Nutcracker is enormously popular in the United States, where it is performed across the nation by professional ballet companies as well as by countless amateur groups, especially during the Christmas holiday season.

An outstanding arrangement of "The Nutcracker" (http://www.noteworthysheetmusic.com/nsm/products-a-services/flute-a-piano/117-tchaikovsky-the-nutcracker-flute-a-piano) suite has been created by Mary Jane Rupert for flute and piano and recently published by Noteworthy Sheet Music, LLC (NSM).  This beautifully notated edition includes all of the pieces from the original Suite Op.71a from the ballet by Tchaikovsky, except the Overture.  Flutists and pianists will be equally pleased with Dr. Rupert’s delightful and knowledgeable arrangements of these beloved pieces:  March, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Trepak (Russian Dance), Arab Dance, Chinese Dance, Dance of the Reed Flutes, and Waltz of the Flowers.  Professionals, students, and amateur musicians should all find uses for these memorable gems—as encores, recital pieces, and as part of the repertoire for more informal musical occasions.

Mary Jane Rupert, pianist and harpist, has performed as soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player in many groups in the Boston area throughout the past three decades.  At the American Harp Society's National Conference in Boston she was a soloist, and with flutist Peter Bloom in their duo "2" (http://www.chamber-music.org/member/2) (as pianist and harpist) she has toured the United States, Thailand, and New Zealand.  She has played with such groups as the Southcoast Chamber Players, Musica Sacra, the Cecilia Society and the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra.  Educated at Oberlin College and Indiana University, Ms. Rupert earned a B.M. in piano, M.M. degrees in both harp and piano, and a doctorate in piano performance.  Having taught at Western Michigan University, Oberlin College, and Wellesley College, she now maintains a private studio for both piano and harp in Cambridge, MA.
