The New Energy Bill – What Does It Mean?

The new Energy Bill has come under fire from many in parliament; Indigo Swan looks into why it is important for business energy.

June 24, 2013 - PRLog -- The planned reforms to the Energy Bill have come under fire from the House of Commons recently, with Baroness Worthington leading the criticisms of the proposed changes. Her comments were that the government was trying to ‘renationalise’ the electricity market instead of giving the market clearly defined outcomes. Baroness Worthington’s concerns are that the changes will lead do a discouragement of investors, only prolonging the existing lack of investment in the nation’s energy production.

According to Baroness Verma, the main proponent of the bill, this bill comes at a “critical time for the country”, with electricity demand expected to double over the next 40 years despite the closure of one fifth of the country’s generation capacity over the next decade. The bill is designed to not only secure the supply of electricity clearly needed by consumers, but also generate a further 250,000 jobs for the nation.

Despite concerns from many, new Energy Bill passed its second reading in the House of Lords on the 18th June, and will now move onto the committee stage scheduled to begin on the 2nd July. It is clear that this will be an important time for the Energy Industry as a whole, effecting both private and business consumers alike at a time when energy costs are at the forefront of the public consciousness.
