LOS ANGELES - June 23, 2013 - PRLog -- Instagram recently released a video feature, and it didn’t take long for many to decide they were jumping ship on Vine while others stood their ground as proclaimed ‘viners’ or stuck to their stills. For the general autobiographical social network user this likely means they will be sticking to Instagram. Instagram has their existing thriving network and the interface they are comfortable with while Vine is a new experience and a different community of friends and the heavy hitter artists are different there than on Instagram too.

Both are great simple scrolling interfaces but they had a different medium. Now that they both have video (http://instagram.com/p/a4oTT9kMuC/) there is serious doubt concerning whether they both can thrive. However, there are definite difference in the video features and the community for those image makers and social network gurus that makes Vine and Instagram’s video different, not better or worse.

Vine provided the opportunity for many of us to ride the learning curve of making short videos on the small network so when Instagram came out, there was a little more knowledge and thought behind video clip creation. The heavy hitter community on Vine is different than Instagram’s because it is a different medium and requires different skills. A great still photo doesn’t necessarily make a great video. While Instagram is crowding in on Vine’s video territory I commend the designer’s respect to the still image in allowing Instagrammers to pick the still frame that is seen when scrolling. This integrity of imagery should be maintained on Instagram regardless of the new medium. Please, work out your learning curve on Vine still with your 35 followers, not 235 followers.

There are a two major differences in each video function that will dictate the use if they each choose to capitalize on their strengths.

Vine:

- Loop – This automatic loop is crucial to many of the best vines. It adds a whole other level to many of these 7 second moments as they repeat over and over. Vine is significantly better for companies to advertise on because the loop raises the odds of the images they create to be watched again. Having to push play mandates a desire to watch it again.

-Stop Animation – Yes, you can start and stop both videos but Intagram’s record requires you hold it down to record. Vine records with just a click on the screen. This allows for a far more rapid stop animation video that simply cannot be achieved in Instagram.

An excellent Vine that utilizes all of these is Target’s vine account (https://vine.co/v/b3U9Mdm2qLm). Their few videos are outstanding stop animation loops and very gentle advertising.

Instagram:

- Time – You get 15 seconds, which can be a lifesaver for many of those moments where you just clicked record a bit too soon to capture the whole thing. However, this can also mean sitting through bad videos that are twice as long. Lets use our time wisely. You don’t have to use it all.

- Filters – Well, this is pretty cool, when used right, and not obsessively. The ability to give videos a little glow, classic black and white, or an artistic edge does fall in line with what got people hooked on those little stylized square photos. Instagram has given the daily life a sense of artistry and it is a natural digital progression to finally include moving images. Filtering makes sense for keeping up what makes Instagram great.

Vine vs. Instagram Video: Which is Better?

I propose the two are different. Lets keep it classy and maintain that artistic imagery on Instagram. Lets keep it active and focus on Vine’s strengths of stop animation and a constantly looping video. @LizDevine on Instagram, an excellent photographer, made her stance very clear (http://instagram.com/p/ay178oqtVE/) on how she used the two networks separately. Choose what you share on which network! GQ Magazine wrote an Instagram Video: An Early Adopter’s Etiquette Guide (http://www.gq.com/blogs/the-feed/2013/06/instagram-video-...) — I recommend checking out.

While Vine may have lost their social networking autobiographical audience they wont loose the moving image-makers that Instagram just wasn’t enough for. For those who are disgruntled about the clogged feed of bad videos my tip is – turn auto play “OFF”.
