LITHONIA, Ga. - June 22, 2013 - PRLog -- When your car stops running properly, the last thing that would enter your mind would probably be car belts and hoses. In terms of car maintenance, belts and hoses might not exactly be given the limelight. However, if you do not give attention to your belts and hoses, your car could fail at any given time and you will not even know why.

These are the main car belts and hoses found in your vehicle. Read on to learn about them and how you can deal with maintenance as well as fixing related problems.

Car Belts

Check the tensions at least once a month. If they need adjusting, do it yourself or have a local car service do it for you. Do not check belt tensions while your engine is running!

If the belt is too loose, it will wear out sooner and might not drive correctly. If it is too tight, it will strain the bearings and wear them out faster. You should depress the belt at the center of the longest run by no more than one inch or 25 mm.

The following are the main car belts in your vehicle:

1.       Drive Belt

There are a number of belts in your cars. The main belt in most cars is the drive belt. Depending on the make and model of your car, the drive belt runs other components such as the water pump, power steering, the alternator and others. This is found in the open and you can easily test and renew it if needed.

2.       Timing Belt

The timing belt connects the camshaft and crankshaft. It also makes sure the opening and closing of the valves is synchronized with the pistons. If the synchronization is off, the engine will stop. The timing belt is hidden under the covers. You could go to local services and have the timing belt checked to maintain the synchronization.

Car Hoses

Before checking your car hoses, make sure your engine is not running and has cooled down.

It is recommended to check every hose you can see every 4-6 weeks. See to it that they are connected properly. Check for cracks and replace those that have worn off. Another way to see if you need a new hose is to flex it. If it makes a crunching or cracking noise, feels hard and inflexible and/or is particularly sticky, you might need a new one. You can replace them yourself or have a car service do it for you.

These are the main hoses in your car:

1.       Air intake hoses

These are used to take in air to the air filter and pass it to the carburettor which controls the mixture of gasoline and air that enter the cylinders. The air intake hoses are also connected to the air conditioning and the heating/cooling system.

2.       Coolant hoses

The most important of these hoses are those that are connected to the radiator. They come in pairs, notably one at the top and another at the bottom. Check if they are firmly attached and are not soft, bulging or cracked.

Like your other car components, it is important that all car belts and hoses are in good condition. They might seem unimportant, but if they are not regularly maintained, they will stop working and your engine will fail.
