For the 2013 calendar year, medical professionals are recruiting sickle cell patients for more than 100 clinical trials. In North Carolina, Duke University is recruiting patients for the treatment of pain using Heparin. Duke is also recruiting patients to measure the effectiveness of daily consumption of broccoli in a blended milkshake form for three weeks in the prevention of sickling and subsequent pain crisis. Also, in the Netherlands, medical professionals are recruiting patients for the treatment of pain using the drug, N-Acetylcystein (NAIC). The Duke and Netherland trials are expected to close by December 2013, March 2015, and October 2014, respectively.
