Sherway Gardens' Gallery in the Garden: Call of the Wild

By: Sherway Gardens

TORONTO - June 24, 2013 - PRLog -- Sherway Gardens’ current Gallery in the Garden exhibit entitled Call of the Wild presents a series of animal and bird portraits by Janice Ykema that go beyond the usual wildlife and nature painting to express the strong personalities of the creatures she loves and admires..  The exhibit is on display until July 13 in the corridor at door 3. For more information call 416-621-1070 or visit www.sherwaygardens.ca.

Raised on the outskirts of the picturesque town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Janice Ykema currently lives in Hamilton.  Her interest in art was firmly established by the tender age of thirteen, when she attempted the rigorous juried entry process of the Ontario College of Art and was accepted into their first year program. She obtained her B. Design at OCAD in 2005, having delayed her dream of art in order to raise a family.

Janice’s paintings do not fit into a particular style.  Motivated to express her inward visions, personal experiences, imaginings and memories, one of her current passions is to paint alla prima, quickly capturing the essence of the birds and animals around her. These portraits are eloquent and painterly, with wonderful textures and colours.

Janice is a member of Visual Arts Mississauga, Visual Arts Ontario, Artworks Oakville, Streetsville Co-op, Neilson Park Creative Centre and The Etobicoke Art Group. Her work can be seen  this summer at ‘Artistry On The Lake’, Niagara –On-The-Lake on July 1st; ‘Art By the Lighthouse’, Niagara-On-The-Lake from July 29th  to August 1st; the 52nd Annual ‘Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition’ at Nathan Phillips Square on July  5,6 &7.
