A recent Senate report claims that Apple, Inc., maker of many innovations we hold dear such as the ipod, ipad and Mac computers, has avoided U.S. taxes on $44 billion in sales in the last 3 years, and likely much more previously.  Apple accomplished this feat through a multitude of complex corporate structuring maneuvers, shifting  its foreign income (approximately 60% of the companies total) through an offshore subsidiary in Ireland, a country known as a tax haven for large corporations.  Apple’s structure and strategy are entirely legal under the current U.S. tax code, but is it socially responsible, fair, or ethical?

The tax strategies of Apple have exposed the battle between corporations that aggressively avoid U.S. taxes and the lawmakers whose job is to create and collect revenue for public programs.  Apple is not alone, there is a trend for companies to use complex tax structures to reduce their U.S. taxes, which causes an estimated loss of $90 billion in taxes to the U.S. Treasury every year

The exhibition will examine the current rift between capitalism and patriotism.  Artists are advised to submit work related to research and opinion, using the example of Apple, Inc’s recent headlines about the company’s U.S. tax avoidance as a platform to explore ideas of fiscal patriotism, current tax loopholes and breaks for big business, and tax/ budget reform.
