Local Eighth-Grader Spells Word Correctly to Win National Spelling Bee

What:          Ben’s Delicatessen Restaurant & Caterers is hosting a special guest, Arvind Mahankali, a Bayside resident and winner of this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee. Joined by his family, Arvind will come to Ben’s to enjoy the restaurant’s famous knaidel.

The word “knaidel” is a Yiddish term which comes from the German word meaning “dumpling.” According to Merriam-Webster, “knaidel” is defined as “a small mass of leavened dough cooked by boiling or steaming.” Arvind, who attends Nathaniel Hawthorne Middle School, spelled the word “knaidel” correctly to win the National Spelling Bee.

When:          Monday, June 17

         5:30 p.m.-6:15 p.m.

         211-37 26th Avenue

         Bayside, NY

Directions:      From the Cross Island Parkway North:
Take Exit 32 to Bell Boulevard. Turn left on 26th Avenue, then make another left onto Bell Boulevard. Go one mile. Ben’s is located inside the Bay Terrace Shopping Center on the right-hand side.
