JTHAR, adjacent to Joshua Tree National Park, is a six-week residency program that provides work/living space for emerging & mid career artists to explore their creative projects. The public will be invited to a group show of their work at JTAG gallery, 61607 29 Palms Hwy. Joshua tree, Ca. 92252. Opening reception Friday, August 23 at 6pm. Show closes August 25. For more information, contact Frederick Fulmer—760- 2013 Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency recipients: LILAH FOWLER, BEKA GOEDDE, YONGJAE KIM, MINJUNG LEE, CHRIS SHAW, VERA XIMENES LILAH FOWLER Sculptor www.lilahfowler.com Currently lives and works in London, England. She received an M.A. in sculpture from the Royal College of Art & B.A. (Hons) Sculpture from Edinburgh College of Art. Presently is a Teaching Fellow in Sculpture at Slade School of Fine Art, UCL. Fowler’s interest is in the design of urban spaces & architecture. She proposes to make objects that are a response to the desert environment & address ideas around human experience of space. She plans to use local sites as a springboard, including Arata Isozaki’s bedroom pavilions near Pioneertown and the Joshua Tree Retreat Center. BEKA GOEDDE Sculptor www.bekagoedde.com MFA, Sculpture, Bard College, New York BA, Behavioral Neuroscience & Philosophy, Columbia University, Barnard College, NY Goedde’s work is based in drawing & object-making. She plans to continue her work in pairing a sculptural object to it’s same form as a full scale portrait drawing. This will involve building and redrawing several times over, wood & plaster objects in the form of a table setting. YONGJAE KIM Painter www.yongjaestudio,com MFA Painting Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, N.Y. BFA Painting Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea Kim's paintings will aim to tackle his concerns regarding manmade systems and human alienation. He plans to compose facades of residential buildings from Brooklyn or Seoul displaced within the landscape of the Mojave Desert. MINJUNG LEE Sculptor www.minjunglee.net MFA Sculpture, Slade School of Fine Arts, UCL, London, UK BFA Sculpture, Seoul National University. Seoul, South Korea Lee will be using the process of sun printing to create large scale theatre-like curtains that are soaked by the desert sun. She aims to catch in the work the sense of blindness, vertigo and being lost in the midst of a vast open field imbued with heat and light. Minjung Lee was recently awarded the Julia Wood Prize at Slade Fine Arts. CHRIS SHAW Photographer www.chrisshaw.carbonmade.com Chris Shaw is the author of many photography books, including Life As A Night Porter, an A3-sized photographic monograph capturing the life and lifestyle of a night porter in London 1993-2004. Shaw proposes a series of desert landscapes to communicate his feeling that nature, as a higher spiritual power, will never be beaten by commerce or industrialization. VERA XIMENES Mixed Media Artist www.Veraximenes.com Born in Fortaleza, Brazil and currently resides in Sacramento, California. Her work has been shown extensively nationally & internationally. She attended the School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro & California State University in Sacramento. During the residency, Ximenes will incorporate non- conventional materials into her abstract, experimental works, inspired by the horizons, stillness, shadow and light of the desert. http://www.jthar.com End
