ArcStone Casting & Design Introduces the “Big Nativity” for Christmas 2013

SALT LAKE CITY
– ArcStone Casting & Design, a manufacturer of large format artwork and architectural products is in the process of completing the largest commercially available outdoor nativity set. The Big Nativity includes 9 statues which incorporate 15 figures and is scaled to almost 8 feet tall.

The company has manufactured more than 120 larger than life nativity sets for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which are on display at their temple grounds throughout the world during Christmas. It has long been a dream of owner Paul Quilter to make a similar type of nativity set available to a broader audience and on even a larger scale.

“We are very excited to offer the Big Nativity. It has been a project which I have wanted to do for years. Churches, businesses, and home owners now have an entirely new outdoor display option when it comes to celebrating the true meaning of Christmas.

A lot of thought and design went into the overall look and feel of the sculptures, as well as the composition of the display. I wanted something unique, traditional, and elegant, most importantly it had to represent the peaceful, respectful nature of this most important day, our Saviors Birth.” Paul Quilter, Owner.

The nativity will be fabricated using a proprietary bonded marble fiberglass composition formulated by the company. The statues will be white in color, but may be fabricated to a custom finish or even hand painted.

Sculptures included in the set:

(1) Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus. (2) Kneeling Wiseman. (3) Standing and Kneeling Wise Men. (4) Shepherd Man and Shepherd Boy. (5) Standing Shepherd Man. (6) Ox. (7) Donkey. (8) Ewe and Lamb. (9) Sheep.

The Process of Making the Big Nativity:

The process for fabricating the Big Nativity is complex. It starts with a concept drawing. From that drawing clay maquettes are sculpted of each piece in the set. The clay maquettes are then scanned to create a 3D mesh model of each figure. The 3D mesh model is then enlarged on the computer. The enlarged model is then programed into the CNC milling machine which cuts an enlarged copy of the sculpture out of foam. This foam enlargement acts as an armature for the actual large finished sculpture. The foam is covered with clay and all the final detail work is sculpted on the figure. Fiberglass and silicone molds are then made of the large clay sculptures. These molds are then used to rotationally cast the final statues. The final finish is applied and they are crated for shipping.
