ORLANDO, Fla. - June 13, 2013 - PRLog -- Understanding that Florida is fundamentally considered by most to be the exact opposite of Canada where ice hockey is not only a national sport, but part of the Canadian culture; and realizing that Florida is not known for winter sports in general, one must ask, "How could a young hockey player in Florida get to play in the National Hockey League?" Ice hockey is after all the Canadian pastime, and is a winter sport that requires first and foremost: Ice.

Step One: Earn an invitation to exclusive hockey camps such as the 2013 CCM Skills Camp in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Check. A central Florida youth born in 2000 who often practices at the Daytona Ice Arena, Hunter Chard, has accepted the invitation and is doing what he has to do to get 1400 miles north. Although the CCM camp has no correlation to the NHL, Hunter is as proud as if it was his first stride toward his NHL goal. With the invitation comes the task of testing out all of the international hockey equipment manufacturing legend's gear, and he's equally happy to take that on.

Hockey Deterrents to Floridians, Other Than the Obvious
Ice and snow notwithstanding, hockey is a complicated game that requires all mental and physical faculties. There are so many skills, movements, and scenarios in which one has to spend time and money in training, practice, and on competitive teams to become well versed - on ice. This is far from an easy sport, and not for the faint of heart. Some kids show that heart and desire at a young age, and go on to play in the NHL many years later - northern kids. A true sign of a young individual who is setting out on that long road of commitment becomes apparent when all they talk about is hockey; when they begin to show a hard core desire to train for and learn about the game, on and off ice. Geography and climate considered, these would be rare (maybe even odd) traits or desires of a Florida youth. To those rare, able, and devoted kids come the spoils of the game, such as recognition, perks, invitations to exclusive competitive events, and even college hockey scholarships - up north. These are the elite players, destined to be legends, and yes they're almost all from the north.

Without frozen ponds for non-stop, cost-free skating, and without outdoor community or backyard ice rinks on which to play, practice, and learn, most Floridians must pay greatly for ice time. At almost $400 per hour for ice rental in many Florida arenas; $50 per hour for small group clinics; $100 per hour for individual clinics; $2500 per child on a competitive travel hockey team with just a twenty game schedule; and thousands of dollars per child for out of state tournaments, the hundreds of hours of training, games, and really expensive equipment would cost a child tens of thousands of dollars to gain the capabilities, experience, and exposure required to make it to a level or league noticeable to the NHL, such as Division 1 NCAA hockey. Cost of participation can put an early freeze on a Floridian's hockey career as an even bigger deterrent than geography and climate.

About NCAA Hockey
Only tier one college hockey teams can offer scholarships. Those teams can provide a high profile opportunity for players to be noticed by professional hockey scouts. The NCAA has produced some outstanding NHL and other professional players who also have an education, therefor an alternate career path. As an grade-A student, Hunter has set his sights on the NCAA first. That's looking far into the future, especially for a youngster from Florida, but he understands the wisdom behind it.

About the NHL
The NHL is the foremost highest level one can attain in hockey. There are other minor pro hockey leagues in North America and Europe, but the best of the best get to play in the NHL. Young hockey players everywhere dream of their name on the Stanley Cup, but most of the players that earn the privilege to play in the league that competes for said championship trophy come from Canada. A Floridians odds of getting struck by lightning are probably much higher than their chances of making it to the NHL, or the NCAA for that matter. Speaking of Lightning, the NHL does have two Florida teams, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Florida Panthers, but can you guess where their players mostly come from?

About CCM Hockey
Young elite hockey players are a focus of CCM, a major hockey equipment manufacturer deeply routed in the legends of the rigorous sport, and they encourage youths with their slogan, "Start your legend." CCM equipment is very popular among NHL players and elite hockey players everywhere, many of whom are legends. To be invited by CCM to an event that bears their name is an honor at any age group. To be selected to attend a free CCM Skills Camp in Canada is very rare. Hunter Chard is rarer than rare because he's a boy in FLorida, chosen to attend the invitation only 2013 CCM Skills Camp on June 23rd in Ottawa, Ontario, where he'll be decked out in all of their latest gear and asked to evaluate it. This honor is one giant step toward his big milestone of playing on a tier one college hockey team with a scholarship.

About Hunter Chard
Hunter practices and plays at rinks around Florida, but likes to practice in the Daytona Ice Arena of South Daytona where ice time is much less expensive. If you care to sponsor Hunter for all of the expensive training and equipment he'll continue to need to get an NCAA college hockey scholarship, you can visit http://www.gofundme.com/3820bs. By sponsoring Hunter, you may even be joining a Floridian cause to eventually bust one deserving young man into the ranks of the most famous league of winter sport players in the world - the northern dominated, National Hockey League.
