Follow on Google News | Anglers Compete for Cash and Prizes at Star Island Yacht Club’s 27th Annual Shark TournamentBy: Star Island Yacht Club Local anglers and their crewmates What: Star Island Yacht Club will host its 27th Annual Shark Tournament. For two days, anglers will be competing to see who will bring home the heaviest shark, mako or fish of another species. This year’s prize money pool will be $60,000 plus custom trophies, prizes and Calcuttas. The awards ceremony will follow the second day of fishing. Last year, more than $550,000 was paid out. The big winners were the crew of Mike Marro’s “Bluefin,” In addition to this outstanding competition, all sportsmen will contribute to the studies of the shark by tagging and releasing sharks that do not meet strict weight requirements. Last year, over 300 sharks were released back into the ocean. Of the sharks that were weighed in, over 750 pounds of edible shark meat was donated to the Long Island Council of Churches’ food pantry to help feed those in need. When: Friday, June 14 6:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Saturday, June 15 6:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Where: Star Island Yacht Club 59 Star Island Road Montauk, NY Directions: Take Route 27 (Sunrise Highway) east. Stay on Rte. 27 East until you drive through Montauk Village. Turn left onto County Road 77 (West Lake Drive). Go approximately 1.5 miles and bear right towards Star Island Road.
