Westside Behavioral examines childhood obesity issues

A new study found that childhood obesity is associated with academic performance and emotional distress. The study was published in Child Development and run by researchers at the University of Missouri, the University of California, and the University of Vermont.

"The findings illustrate the complexity of relations among children's weight status, social and emotional well-being, academics, and time." according to Dr. Sara Gable, who led the study.

The researchers looked at more than 6,250 children followed from the time they started kindergarten through fifth grade. Children whose obesity continued from kindergarten through fifth grade performed more poorly on math, were lonelier, sadder, more anxious and had fewer and less well developed social skills.

This summary was provided as a public service by Westside Behavioral Care, Inc., a company that provides outpatient counseling, psychotherapy, and mental health services across the greater Denver metropolitan area.
