Costco to Host Book Signing for Local Roseburg Authors

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - June 11, 2013 - PRLog -- As early as 1852, the hardy settlers of the self -proclaimed State of Jefferson began to rally against the California and Oregon governments. The autonomous and determined spirit of border-county residents perseveres today, and nowhere is this better evidenced than in the character of the communities that remain.

Using a compilation of current and past photographs, gathered from both public and private sources, authors Bernita L. Tickner and Gail Fiorini-Jenner rekindle the embers of independence still glowing in the mythical State of Jefferson.

Originally called Deer Creek, Roseburg was the creation of entrepreneur Aaron Rose. After becoming county seat for Douglas County in 1854, the city's growth was assured. Roseburg became the bridge between the populated Willamette Valley and the mining districts of Southern Oregon. Situated in a panoramic valley created by the North and South Umpqua Rivers, Roseburg's population increased dramatically over the next 155 years. In 1872, the Oregon and California Railroad arrived and the city became a major center of commerce in Oregon. Today Roseburg continues to present a serene and picturesque face to cars rushing by on I-5.

Author Diane L. Goeres-Gardner is an award-winning writer specializing in Oregon history. A retired educator living in Douglas County, she is a fifth-generation Oregonian whose ancestors settled in Oregon in 1852. She has written two major books on Oregon's early criminal justice system.
