Follow on Google News | Wright Animal Hospital Joins Innovative Ovarian Cancer Symptom Awareness InitiativeThe Ovarian Cancer Symptom Awareness organization's Veterinary Outreach Program was inspired by the powerful human-animal bond. Wright Animal Hospital is joining the initiative and hosting a free celebration on Thursday, June 20 from 11am-1pm.
By: Wisecarver Public Relations, LLC “We are very happy to join this innovative awareness program, one that fully embraces the powerful human-animal bond and spotlights the role veterinarians serve in promoting and protecting public health,” says Kristin L. Junkas, DVM, Wright Animal Hospital. The VOP development was created by OCSA executive director, Vallie Szymanski, with strong engagement and support from the Illinois Department of Public Health and representatives from the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association (ISVMA) and the One Health Commission. Szymanski explains that including her own “spokesdog,” According to Peter Weber, executive director of the ISVMA, members report that pet owners talking about their pet’s health often feel comfortable talking about their own health concerns. Supplied with knowledge surrounding the silent symptoms of ovarian cancer, VOP members can exponentially increase the number of individuals receiving the message and help save lives. Leaders in the community and veterinary industry will gather to recognize the Wright Animal Hospital as one of a growing number of veterinary clinics across the state to join this innovative awareness program. Each year, over 20,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and approximately 14,000 women die from the disease. There is an urgent need to share the silent symptoms so early detection and treatment are achieved, and lives are saved. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, over 80 percent of veterinarians graduating today are female. This increases the possibility of a personal connection to the disease and a viable tie to the purpose of the VOP. Dr. Junkas is quick to point out that VOP member clinics will not dispense medical advice. They will simply display brochures with messaging that helps raise awareness about the disease. These brochures list the predominant silent symptoms include bloating, abdominal pain, feeling full quickly and urinary problems, and recommend seeing a doctor should any symptom last longer than two weeks. The event at Wright Animal Hospital will include notable speakers including Dr. Roger Mahr, Interim CEO of the One Health Commission; Dr. Kurt Klepitsch, owner Gateway Veterinary Clinic in St. Charles, the first VOP member clinic to join the VOP; and Vallie Szymanski, co-founder and executive director of OCSA. The formal VOP Ceremony will be at 11 a.m., and festivities end at 1 p.m. For more information regarding the event, visit Wright Animal Hospital http://www.wrightanimalhospital.com.com.
