Notre Dame Alumni to Honor Two Outstanding Educators

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - June 11, 2013 - PRLog -- Notre Dame Alumni to honor two outstanding educators

In commemoration of the fortieth anniversary of undergraduate coeducation at the University of Notre Dame, the Notre Dame Club of Fort Lauderdale is honoring Sister Marie Schramko, OSF and Sister John Norton Barrett, OP as its Persons of the Year. The annual Celebration and Communion Breakfast will be held on Sunday, June 23 at the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame in Dania Beach.

Since her arrival in South Florida in 1961, Sr. Marie has been a dynamic presence in Fort Lauderdale’s Catholic education community. She helped found the Co-Institutional Cardinal Gibbons High School in 1961 and served as Principal of the Girls’ Division until 1972, when the Boys’ and Girls’ Divisions merged to form the singular co-educational Cardinal Gibbons High School. In addition to her administrative duties, she also taught Algebra, Geometry, Biology, and Chemistry. Though she retired from the classroom in 2010, Sr. Marie continues to serve Cardinal Gibbons as Assistant Principal. Sr. Marie has been recognized over the years for her contributions and dedication.  She truly embodies the motto of Cardinal Gibbons High School: “Educating the Heart as well as the Mind”.

Sr. John has served the community of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale since 1966, first as a mathematics teacher for fourteen years, and then as Principal for sixteen years until she retired in 1996. She is currently Coordinator of Special Events for the school; in this capacity, she organizes fundraisers, works closely with parents, and counsels students. She has received numerous awards throughout her life and career, but in describing herself, Sr. John Norton simply says”… I am trying to figure out how to do some of the things that can bring joy and blessings into the lives of others.”

As one of the chapters of the Notre Dame Alumni Association, the Notre Dame Club of Fort Lauderdale serves all alumni, parents, and friends of the University in Broward County. The Club strives to foster the “Six C’s” – Community Service, Camaraderie, Catholic/Christian Spirituality, Continuing Education, Current Student Support, and Communication – with a variety of events and activities throughout the year.

The Celebration and Communion Breakfast begins at 9:30 AM with a Mass concelebrated by Rev. Mark Thesing, CSC and Rev. Michael Greer, VF. Breakfast begins at 10:30AM. This year’s featured speaker is Stephanie Mola (’09), Director of Special Events for the Notre Dame Alumni Association. A fundraising raffle will be held, with prizes including two tickets to the Notre Dame - Oklahoma University game in South Bend, and a golfing foursome at Grand Oaks. Tickets to the breakfast are $25 for adults and $10 for children. Raffle tickets are $20 for one, $50 for three, and $100 for a book of ten. A variety of sponsorship and underwriting opportunities are also available. The IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame is located at 300 Gulf Stream Way, Dania Beach FL 33004.
