KINGMAN, Ariz. - June 10, 2013 - PRLog -- When Joyce Mollenhauer, ND and her partners decided to open an assisted living facility In Arizona, they implemented a program that would actually improve the well-being of their clients. According to the naturopath, there are three predominant areas of living contribute to a state of optimum health for senior citizens. These are nutrition, exercise and rest.

Excellent nutrition is of utmost importance. First, gain the necessary education. Some basic principles include the intake of sufficient water, adequate fiber, fresh vegetables and fruits and good protein resources. Sufficient chewing and dining in a relaxed manner are equally important for effective digestion and assimilation of the foods ingested.

"Many life styles are built around car travel, sitting long periods and minimal physical movement, " said Mollenhauer. "We keep our residents active."

Consistent exercise is vital as our bodies are designed for movement. The normal physiology of our bodies involves effective breathing, excellent circulation and regular elimination through our kidneys, bowels and skin. These require healthy functioning of our muscles and bones ensured through physical activities such as walking, climbing and running. Two important outcomes of regular exercise are normal body weight and abundant energy levels.

Last but not least is “proper” rest. Too lengthy a sleep can actually leave a person with stiff muscles and aches and pains. Inactivity is the cause. If one carries their worries into the sleep state, one often awakens still feeling weary. There is a wide range of optimum amount of sleep. The level of “delta” leads to deep sleep resulting in a restorative function. Meditation, soothing music, laughter and gratitude are examples of strategies to ensure true “restful” sleep.

"Attention to these three vital areas is providing a better quality of life for our clients than many of them have experienced before," reported Mollenhauer. "Our elderly folk have a great deal to contribute to the community when they feel healthy and energetic."
