UNITED STATES, N.Y. - June 10, 2013 - PRLog -- Valerie Goodman is pleased to announce the release of Jacques Jarrige: The Searching Line, the first book exclusively devoted to the artist’s work as well as Valerie Goodman Gallery’s first publication. An exhibition featuring a selection of Jacques Jarrige's recent designs is opening concurrently with the release of the monograph.

An essay by Jeannine Falino, curator at the Museum of Art and Design in New York, traces the development of Jarrige's exceptional body of work from his early encounters with 20th century painting at home followed by his fascination with African art and the sculptures of Moore and Calder to the discovery of his very own voice: “His sculptural inquiry into solids and voids has yielded some arresting designs that are imbued with a subtle, yet undeniably zoomorphic quality. Meanwhile, Jarrige’s exploration of the meandering line has led to some exciting breakthroughs in lighting, screens, and seating.”

In an in-depth interview with journalist Claudia Steinberg this original thinker sheds light on his thought processes and material investigations. To a question regarding the clearly hand-made, tremulous lines that define the pieces currently on view at Valerie Goodman Gallery, Jarrige offers this response:"I work with simple materials and small hand tools. Originally this approach came of necessity because I couldn't afford anything else. At the same time I chose neutral and versatile materials like MDF (medium-density fiberboard) and brass - and even bronze, which acquires its value mainly through the work in the foundry. These poor materials have allowed me a kind of freedom in expressing my personal gesture. And the simplicity and directness of my work is what keeps it true.”

The book and the exhibit both emphasize the kinetic quality of Jarrige’s work which is not only present in his actual mobiles but also in his tall secretary and his multi-panel screens: all are carefully calibrated balancing acts, their will to movement barely contained.

The book is available at the gallery and online at www.thesearchingline.com

The work of Jacques Jarrige will be on display at Valerie Goodman Gallery, 315 East 91st Street, 4th Floor New York, NY 10128,  212 348 29 68 from June 11th till July 30th. – An opening reception will be held on June 10th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
