Blue Star Museums Program

These museums are three of more than 2,000 museums across America

to offer free admission to military personnel and their families this summer


Portsmouth, VA – The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, The Lightship Portsmouth, and The Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center announced the launch of Blue Star Museums, a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and more than 2,000 museums across America. The museums will offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from now through Labor Day (Monday, September 2, 2013). Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families.

The museums officially launched the program on Memorial Day, May 27th, 2013. In the past few years, Blue Star Museums welcomed more than 300,000 active duty military personnel and their families during the summer seasons.  

About the Portsmouth Museums

The Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center, housed in the 1846 Courthouse, is devoted to offering quality educational, cultural and aesthetic experiences in the arts through rotating visual art exhibits, lectures, classes and performances. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum researches, preserves and promotes the history of the City of Portsmouth, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and the armed forces in Hampton Roads.  The museum accomplishes its mission by offering exhibitions, publications, lectures and educational programs.

The Lightship Portsmouth tells the story of those who served in the Lightship Service, their dedication to life aboard the vessel and service to the navigation of mariners through preservation, educational programs and exhibition of the lightship.
