Operation Kindness Celebrates National Adopt-A-Cat Month

HOUSTON - June 6, 2013 - PRLog -- CARROLLTON, TX (June 5, 2013)…In honor of National Adopt-A-Cat Month, Operation Kindness – the oldest and largest no-kill shelter in North Texas – is offering $25 off cat and kitten adoptions throughout the month of June.

“We hope more of our temporary residents will find forever homes during June, which is National Adopt-A-Cat Month. There are so many great animals here that are waiting, like this handsome guy, Duke,” says Julie Goff, development manager of Operation Kindness.

Duke is an orange and white striped tabby who was transferred to Operation Kindness from a city shelter. This affectionate four-year-old has striking yellow eyes and a sweet disposition.

“Duke loves attention. He always comes running to the front of his cage when we walk by. He loves to snuggle – to be held and petted, and he purrs so loud, like he’s just delighted that you’re there. He’s also very intelligent and extremely well trained – he never misses his litter box, something we all appreciate,” notes Goff with a laugh.

She adds that Duke’s ideal forever home would include a loving family without other cats, so that he’d get all the attention! Duke is one of more than 70 adult cats waiting to be adopted from Operation Kindness into their forever homes, a phrase Operation Kindness uses often.

“A forever home is a place where they will be cherished as family for the rest of their lives, not just a couple of months or a couple of years. When you adopt an animal, you’re making a commitment to care for them for their entire life – it’s not a decision that should be made lightly,” says Peggy Marshall, interim executive director for Operation Kindness. “But it is extremely rewarding. When you let a dog or cat into your heart, they will be there forever. They can bring so much joy.”

This concept of a forever home is widespread. Last month the American Humane Association published research on the retention rate of adopted dogs and cats in homes. The results indicate that more than one in 10 animals adopted from animal shelters are no longer in their homes six months later. This equates to hundreds of thousands of animals and contributes to overcrowding issues in shelters, one of the original reasons behind National Adopt-A-Cat Month. The American Humane Association began promoting Adopt-A-Cat Month in 1975 to highlight overcrowding issues in shelters. The association estimates that roughly four million cats and kittens end up in shelters every year.

“As a no-kill shelter, it’s extremely important for us to continue finding forever homes for all of our animals. Among other things, it frees up space, allowing us to keep rescuing more dogs and cats,” adds Marshall.

On average, Operation Kindness adopts out 1,000 cats per year. Currently, it has roughly 70 adult cats and 35 kittens ready for adoption.

Like all adult cats at Operation Kindness, Duke is fixed, current on all vaccinations and microchipped with a lifetime registration.
