Ohio-Filmed Paul Bunyan Horror Movie "Axe Giant" to Play at Studio 35 Cinema June 8

PRLog - Jun. 5, 2013 - COLUMBUS, Ohio -- AXE GIANT: THE WRATH OF PAUL BUNYAN, the new horror/creature feature from producer/director Gary Jones (BOOGEYMAN 3, “Xena”) and executive producer Jeff Miller, will get a late-night screening at the Studio 35 Cinema & Drafthouse in Columbus on Saturday, June 8th at 11:30 p.m.
Crestline, OH resident Jones plans to be on hand to introduce the movie. Other cast and crew members in Ohio will most likely attend as well.
“We had a successful cast-and-crew screening at Studio 35 in December and found them very friendly and accommodating, so we look forward to a return engagement,” says Miller, based in Los Angeles.

Much of the movie was shot in Ohio -- at Malabar State Farm, Mohican State Park and Forest, and in the town of Crestline. Crestline’s P13 Entertainment, run by Robert Kurtzman (creator of FROM DUSK TILL DAWN), handled much of the makeup effects and served as the local production center.

Chardon, OH native Edward Douglas of the popular gothic musical group Midnight Syndicate composed the score.

AXE GIANT won the Audience Award at the Shockfest Film Festival in Hollywood, CA in November. Film Radar named it one of the Top Indie Horror Films of the year, with reviewer Jonathan Weichsel saying that it is “a real fun ride. You rarely see this kind of genre film made today with so much care.”

The movie recently played to strong response at the Motor City Nightmares and Texas Frightmare Weekend conventions.

AXE GIANT is a contemporary take on the tall tale of lumberjack Paul Bunyan. Bunyan and his companion, Babe the Blue Ox, were popular characters in late 19th and early 20th century folklore. Bunyan was rumored to be so tall that “his footsteps made the Great Lakes,” and “he dragged his axe and made the Grand Canyon.”

In AXE GIANT, kids at a first-offenders’ boot camp discover that the legend of Paul Bunyan is real, but is much more horrifying than they could have imagined. The survivors must team up with the local sheriff to stop the 15-foot giant’s new rampage of terror.

The movie stars genre vet Joe Estevez, Dan Haggerty (TV's “Grizzly Adams”), Tom Downey (SyFy's WAR OF THE WORLDS), and Tim Lovelace (MOSQUITO). It features leading and supporting roles by Columbus natives Amber Connor, Kristina Kopf, and Daniel Alan Kiely. Mansfield native and former WWF wrestler Chris Hahn (“Johnny Paradise”) plays the title role of Bunyan. Donna Williams, Bud Moffett, and Alan Tuskes are other Ohioans in the cast.

Jesse Kove, Clifton Williams, Victoria Ramos, and Jill Evyn round out the cast. This is the first major role for Kove, son of veteran actor Martin Kove (THE KARATE KID 1-3, RAMBO).

AXE GIANT filmed in three states -- California, Ohio, and Michigan – with California and Ohio taking up the bulk of the shoot.

Miller (HELLBLOCK 13, BALLISTICA) and Jones produced through their company, Kinetic Filmworks, along with newcomer and fellow writer Jason Ancona. Kurtzman and Philip R. Garrett (HORRORS OF WAR), a member of the Cinematic Arts faculty at the Columbus College of Art & Design, joined the team as co-producers. Gary Jones’ Acme Art FX created more than 500 visual effects shots for the film.

AXE GIANT is currently receiving a limited theatrical release by Cinema Purgatorio.
