June 5, 2013 - PRLog -- Cortlandt Manor NY- June 5, 2013 – Hudson Valley Hospital Center was given an “A” Hospital Safety ScoreSM by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. The Hospital Safety ScoreSM was calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel using publicly available data on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections. U.S. hospitals were assigned an A, B, C, D, or F for their safety.

“Patient safety is an everyday focus for our hospital,” said John C. Federspiel, President, Hudson Valley Hospital Center. “Our entire management team along with our medical staff and board members are involved. We strive to excel on every level of care for our patients.”

Calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s nine-member Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors. The panel

The goal of the Hospital Safety Score is to reduce the more than 180,000 yearly deaths from hospital errors and injuries by publicly recognizing safety and exposing harm. “Harm” ranges from infections and acquired injuries (such as bedsores) to medication mix-ups and other errors, some potentially fatal.

The Hospital Safety Score is the latest in a series of quality awards received by Hudson Valley Hospital Center. This year, the Hospital earned a Gold Plus award from the American Heart Association for its Stroke Center and its Maternity Department was awarded Baby Friendly status by Baby Friendly USA for its excellence in maternity care and breastfeeding support.

Last year, the hospital was recertified as a Magnet Hospital, known as the “gold standard” for patient care and nursing management. Recertification is viewed as more difficult an achievement as an initial designation.
