By: Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness In the first event, Nexus personal trainer, competitor and SuperFit Womens Bootcamp program head coach, James Simmons, was joined by several of his female students in the Middleboro YMCA 5k road race. Simmons took first place in his age group and 3rd overall in the race. Simmons noted that each of the bootcamp members logged significant improvements in their times just since their last month’s Ascent 5k race in Lakeville, where Jessica Roderick finished second in her age group and Mirey Medina won second overall in the womens’ division. More importantly, he stated, most of his clients had never run in a race before – or ever believed they could have completed such an event when they first started the program. While the Middleboro race was taking place last weekend, Nexus martial arts student Bob Andersen was also participating in the “Tough Mudder” event in Boston. Tough Mudder, which is referred to as “probably the toughest event on the planet,” is an extreme obstacle course / adventure challenge race that was developed by British Special Forces. For Andersen, who credits much of his functional fitness to his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training, this event marked his second time competing in the event. He earned the coveted “finisher badge” for his efforts. This year Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness was voted Favorite Health & Fitness Center for the 6th consecutive year in the Gateway Favorites voting. In April it became the first training center to be awarded the highest level of fitness certification in the world-renowned Burn With Kearn Core Fitness and Mixed Martial Arts conditioning systems.
