Follow on Google News | The SAMFund's 10th Anniversary Events Raise Funds for Young Adult Cancer Survivors NationwideThe SAMFund for Young Adult Survivors of Cancer celebrates a decade of making a difference in the lives of young adult survivors struggling to move forward after the financial devastation of cancer diagnosis and treatment.
By: The SAMFund for Young Adult Survivors of Cancer More than 72,000 young adults in the United States are diagnosed each year but, as a 2012 grant recipient described, most “do not have a rainy day fund for cancer.” Blindsided by the cost of cancer, many put their lives on hold to successfully fight their diagnosis, only to find that insurmountable medical debt can deplete their entire savings in as little as six months. Independence is lost, stress is heightened, and cancer remains a burden even in remission. “Most people don’t realize the havoc cancer wreaks not only on your body, but also on your savings account. Young adults have the especially difficult task of trying to recover from treatment while also trying to find a job, secure health insurance and live on their own,” says Samantha Watson, Executive Director. “It is our honor to support them and help them move forward in whatever way we can.” East and West coast events in May at Club Café in Boston and MBar Hollywood in Los Angeles brought together a community of SAMFund alumni, volunteers, and supporters to kick-off multiple celebrations. Events in Chicago on June 4th and Wellesley, MA on June 25th will continue the festivities with “Suds for The SAMFund” at Haymarket Pub and Brewery (http://thesamfund.donordrive.com/ On June 27th, New York City’s Stand Up NY (http://thesamfund.donordrive.com/ Together, these 10th anniversary celebration events will enable The SAMFund to grant its **millionth** About The SAMFund The SAMFund supports young adult cancer survivors in the United States as they recover from the financial impact of cancer treatment.
