Why Surrogacy should be Regulated but not banned! A point of view by Dr.Samit Sekhar

Surrogacy is allowed in a lot of countries, regulated in few and prohibited in some. India was one of the first countries in the world to allow gestational surrogacy. If the process is regulated, it becomes a win-win situation for everyone involved, the surrogate and donors get paid, which helps them live better; the parents have their own child, which was always a distant dream, and in turn the economy develops because of the jobs created in the process!

HYDERABAD, India - June 3, 2013 - PRLog -- Surrogacy is in the news again for the legislation of the pro surrogacy bill in Louisana, USA know as the " Louisiana surrogate parenting bill " It still has to undergo further changes, but will rule out gay and unmarried couples if passed in its present state!! So why this Hypocrisy by the champion of human rights and freedom?

A Lot of Hungama was raised when the Indian Govt. banned singles and Gay men and women from having babies through surrogacy in INDIA, but not a word from the western press when a similar guideline is adopted by the USA? Why this hypocrisy?

Now the Americans and other western media propose to ban surrogacy in INDIA but are set to legislate on a pro surrogacy bill in the USA!! According to Dr. Samit Sekhar, it is extremely disappointing to hear the often repeated argument of Indian women being exploited surfacing again and again by various vested interests both in INDIA and Abroad.

The truth is that this argument is being used by anti-surrogacy groups who are against assisted reproduction technologies like IVF and Surrogacy. "I am tired and angry at this misconception being represented about Indian women that they are too ignorant, ill-informed or otherwise unable to make sensible decisions with regards to being surrogate mothers and carrying a pregnancy to term and handing over that baby to the genetic parents whereas in the same breath an American Surrogate is deemed to be of sound judgement?"

Complications will happen and controversies in this exciting and rapidly advancing field of medicine keep cropping up from time to time, hence regulation is the need of the hour.

A majority of surrogacy arrangements end happily with the birth of a healthy baby (ies) and with all the parties feeling satisfied with the process and the outcome. This baby would not have been born at the Kiran Infertility Centre today but for an absolute act of altruism on behalf of the surrogate mother.
