Art at the Arboretum ~ Opening Reception for Artists-in-Residence Alison Jardine & Erika Jaeggli

DALLAS - June 1, 2013 - PRLog -- Arboretum Artists-in-Residence Alison Jardine and Erika Jaeggli have spent several months immersed in the cultivated natural beauty of the Arboretum, with the aim of creating brand new works of art that express their reaction to the surroundings.

In an interview with Pegasus News, Alison Jardine explained that "The exhibition is about retaining wilderness, literally and in the psyche ... The Arboretum is basically propaganda for wilderness. I want our art to bring something very honest and authentic to visitors that will drive home that message for preservation and the need to fund natural space." Erika Jaeggli added "Because the gardens are very cultivated and manicured, I think of it as an artwork in and of itself...and, it becomes a metaphor for our art -- the way things grew and bloomed. We started working in February and continued through the spring. That certainly affected our responses."

As painters, both artists have been painting in the gardens as well as in their studios, and the Residency has led them both to explore new motifs and mediums including 3D paintings, video art and sculptural installation.

These brand new artworks will be exhibited in the Rosine Hall Gallery at the Garden, with an opening reception on June 5th.
A video presentation will be shown at 6:45, refreshments and wine will be served, and parking is free with tickets booked in advance.
The Arboretum will remain open until 10pm for those in attendance.

The Artist's Garden at the Dallas Arboretum is on Wednesday, June 5th beginning at 6:15pm, with a video presentation at 6:45pm. The Gardens stay open late, so visitors can enjoy the sunset as well as the art.

About the Artists

Alison Jardine
Born in Yorkshire, England, Alison Jardine moved to Texas in 2003. Alison’s work has been featured on television on CBS, and her digital art was part of the UK’s cultural olympiad of art events in 2012. Alison recently completed a public art piece on Henderson Avenue in Dallas (2011-2013), and also was selected by Sony to collaborate on a creative photography project.
In addition, she has been selected by Red Bull as a Dallas artist in their program "RedBull Curates".

In October, Alison will be taking up an Art Residency at the Hambidge Center, in Georgia.

She has had several solo shows in Dallas, and has exhibited in various cities including New York, San Francisco and Dallas, and featured in shows curated by artists such as Trenton Doyle Hancock, Aaron Parazette and Alyssa Monks. Alison has featured in many art and news publications, as well as on the cover of books, and has also written articles for art magazines. She regularly gives presentations, and has taught art in public schools. In addition, she manages art shows and events for a non-profit art organization.

Alison’s work is widely collected, and is in the collections of institutions such as University of Wyoming, businesses such as Select Energy, and individual collectors around the world.

Of her work, Alison writes that, “At the edge of representation I find the patterns that comprise the underlying structures, colors, and light available to our biological and intellectual process of vision. My artistic process embraces the experience of nature through its light, forms and color not only as a visual pattern but also as a memory in time. My oil paintings engage with the negative space of composition as a central motif, whether the inorganic pixel or the organic shape of sunlight on leaves, a counterpart to the colors and forms of my pattern-based artworks.

My fascination with nature and light began among the dappled sunlight of the ancient forests of Yorkshire and the clear blue, wide-open wilderness of the Moors where I was born and grew up, and this forged my visual and artistic identity.”

Erika Jaeggli
Erika Jaeggli was born in Baltimore, Maryland to a German mother and New Yorker father. She trained in New York City and now calls Dallas home. Growing up in Baltimore, Erika spent every weekend and summer at the Maryland Institute College of Art. In 1999, she received her undergraduate degree at Columbia University in New York. While attending Columbia, she studied painting under John Currin. In 2003, Erika received a graduate degree at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.  

Erika also studied post-war German art in Berlin, Germany in 1998 at the Freie Universitat. She was an assistant to the artist Mark Dion and to the curator Lisa Corrin. Jaeggli worked at Luhring Augustine Gallery in New York. Her work is informed by her German heritage and experiences in that country and at home. Jaeggli has shown her work in New York, Baltimore, Austin and Dallas. Combining newspaper, charcoal, pencil, and paint, Jaeggli takes the viewer on a ride through her imagination.
