U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Supt Rear Admiral James Helis Keynotes Navy League LI Gala June 12

Event to honor Curtiss-Wright's Jim White at Melville Marriott

MELVILLE, N.Y. - June 1, 2013 - PRLog -- United States Merchant Marine Academy Superintendent Rear Admiral James A. Helis will keynote the Navy League of the United States Long Island Council’s annual gala on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, beginning at 6:15 p.m., at the Melville Marriot, 1350 Old Walt Whitman Road, Melville, N.Y.

The Council will also honor Mr. James D. White, General Manager, Curtiss-Wright Flow Control, Target Rock Group, for his leadership and support to the sea services. Most recently, White chaired the commissioning committee for the U.S.S. MICHAEL MURPHY.

“We are honored Rear Admiral Helis will join us to provide the keynote address. His message on the importance of ensuring the readiness of our nation and preparing a new generation of sailors and merchant mariners for future threats is critical at this time in our nation’s history,” said Owen Watford, Council president. “We are also deeply honored to be able to pay tribute to Jim White, a man who has lived his life in service to our men and women of the sea services. It will be a terrific event to support the mission of the council—to foster educational opportunities for Long Island teens interested in the sea services.”

Rear Admiral James A. Helis, USMS, assumed the duties of the twelfth Superintendent of the United States Merchant Marine Academy on July 23, 2012.  Helis retired at the rank of Colonel, following a distinguished 30-year Army career which began when he was commissioned in the Infantry after graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1979.

His key assignments included: 82nd Airborne Division, Joint Task Force Bravo in Honduras, Alaska, and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. He served as commanding officer of C Company, 2nd Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment; the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment; and the U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion, Columbia, South Carolina.

Rear Admiral Helis is an Army Ranger, a master parachutist and a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, where he served as Chief of Plans for the NATO International Security Assistance Force. His professional foreign travel includes Belgium, Canada, Estonia, France, Germany, Haiti, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Saudi Arabia, and Sweden.

Rear Admiral Helis served as Chairman, Department of National Security and Strategy at the United States Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, from 2004 to 2008, when he was deployed to Afghanistan. He was re-appointed to the position in 2009 after his retirement from the Army.
