Deputy charged for murdering 22 year old

LOS ANGELES - May 31, 2013 - PRLog -- Late night on May 22nd, Deputy Craig Patterson got into a dispute with Julian Dawkins on the corner of Lynnhaven Drive and Evans Lane in Arlington County. At some point during the argument, Patterson shot Dawkins and he was later pronounced dead after being rushed to the nearby hospital.
Patterson, 44, stayed on the scene and called 911, according to the police. He was off duty at the time but was still armed with his gun, badge and handcuffs, according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors argued that there was no way Julian Dawkins could have presented a knife in his pocket in a threatening manner given the way investigators found him.
Earlier in the week, friends and family of Dawkins held a rally calling for Patterson’s arrest.
“It’s a great loss…to the family, the friends, the community,” said family friend Patrick Cooper of Dawkins’ death. “It’s a great loss, the way that it happened makes it even worse, just him being murdered by a police officer, you know. We’re looking for some accountability.”
Pattersons arrest warrant was issued Thursday, he later was taken into custody and charged with murder of 22 year old Julian Dawkins. Deputy Craig Patterson is a 17-year veteran with the sheriffs office and appeared in court via closed-circuit TV Friday. He was also charged with use of a firearm in committing a felony.
