COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - May 31, 2013 - PRLog -- Wild Blue Animal Rescue and Sanctuary (WBARS) is one of more than 60 Colorado animal shelters and rescues that have pledged to not kill animals in their care as part of a nationwide ‘Just One Day’ event.

‘Just One Day’ celebrates shelters and rescues that have taken the pledge to kill no animals for "just one day." The focus will be on increasing adoptions, foster families and awareness within the community.

The average U.S. cost to euthanize a shelter animal is $104, so the founding idea was to use those resources differently for one day, and in turn show how to reform the shelter system to adopt more animals and reduce the killing in the nation’s shelters.

“Wild Blue is and always will be a no-kill rescue, but by signing the ‘Just One Day’ pledge we hope to bring a higher awareness of the possibility that more animal rescues can become no-kill and find alternate ways to manage their community’s homeless animal populations. The first and foremost being more education for animal guardians about spaying and neutering their pets,” said Lauri Cross, executive director of Wild Blue.

Since opening in 2010, Wild Blue has rescued more than 450 dogs, cats and kittens. The number of cats highly outweighs the number of dogs with more than 350 cats rescued and adopted out. 2012 saw the number of dogs and cats rescued and placed into loving homes at over 195, with nearly all of those animals being cats.

Wild Blue also has an active foster program mostly serving young kittens. “There are many animals out there who need saving and that’s what we’re all about,” said Cross.

Wild Blue will be bringing adoptable cats and kittens to be part of a large-scale community festival and mega-adoption event in Denver on Tuesday, June 11, 2013.

All residents are invited to bring family, friends and pets to enjoy the Just One Day Denver event from 3-8 pm at City Park.  Festivities will include live music, yard games, food trucks, animals available for adoption from dozens of shelters, pet vendors, celebrity appearances, a dog show for rescued and adoptable animals hosted by a local grade-school student, and giveaways.

Just One Day Denver is a program of No Kill Colorado and has the partnership of 60 rescues/ shelters and counting. A complete list of participating shelters is available at www.nokilldenver.org or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/NoKillColorado.

The purpose of No Kill Colorado is to facilitate a Colorado where every shelter is open admission and saves more than 90% of the animals in their care. No Kill Colorado's intent is to create, provide and share the necessary resources, education and options to stop the euthanasia of homeless pets in Colorado shelters.

Tens of thousands of pets are killed each year in Colorado because of the lack of life-saving programs that can be implemented without additional cost, and possibly add revenue to the current funds provided to municipal shelters.

Other Colorado Springs-area animal rescues/shelters taking part in this event include Happy Cats Haven (HCH) a no-kill rescue and adoption center exclusively serving cats and kittens. Wild Blue and HCH are also members of the Best Friends Animals Society’s "No More Homeless Pets Network Partners”.
